Short answer: For most startups in 2026 the best Datadog alternative is Grafana Cloud, because its Free plan covers a pre-seed product at $0 and a 4-engineer seed team pays about $27 a month on Pro, against about $320 on Datadog for the same workload. Add Better Stack's free tier for uptime checks and a status page. Choose SigNoz instead if you are on OpenTelemetry from the first commit and want traces and logs in one screen.

Our main Datadog alternatives comparison models a 10-host team. Most startups are not there yet. This page prices the same three tools at the stages before that, where the free tier is the whole budget and the person setting up alerts is also the person shipping the billing page.

All prices are the list rates used in that comparison, checked on the Datadog, Grafana Cloud, Better Stack, and SigNoz pricing pages on October 30, 2026. We do not sell an observability product. None of these four is ours, and none pays us.

What a startup pays at each stage

Three workloads. Pre-seed is 2 hosts, 15 GB of logs, 5 GB of traces, 3,000 metric series, and 2 people. Seed is 5 hosts, 50 GB of logs, 20 GB of traces, 10,000 series, and 4 engineers. Series A is the 10-host model from our main comparison. Metrics are scraped every 60 seconds, Better Stack is priced in its US region, and Datadog includes infrastructure, APM on every host, and indexing of every log line.

StageGrafana CloudSigNoz CloudBetter Stack (telemetry)Datadog (annual list)
Pre-seed (2 hosts, 2 people)$0 on Free$49 minimum (usage is about $19); $0 self-hosted plus your serverAbout $5, plus $29 to $34 per responder if you want pagingAbout $119
Seed (5 hosts, 4 engineers)About $27 on Pro ($19 plus one extra user at $8)About $64About $16, plus responder seatsAbout $320
Series A (10 hosts, 5 people)About $128 on ProAbout $131About $35, plus responder seatsAbout $640

The seed row is where the gap gets silly. Datadog's $320 breaks down as $75 for infrastructure, $155 for APM, $5 for log ingest, and about $85 to index roughly 50 million log events. Grafana Cloud's $27 exists only because a fourth engineer pushes the team past the Free plan's 3-user cap; every other number still fits inside the included 10,000 series, 50 GB of logs, and 50 GB of traces.

SigNoz costs more than Grafana at seed for one reason, metrics. It bills $0.10 per million samples, and 10,000 series scraped every minute is about 432 million samples a month, or $43 of the $64. Scrape every 15 seconds and that line quadruples.

What we would set up on day one

Grafana Cloud Free for metrics, logs, and traces. Better Stack free for uptime checks on the marketing site and the API, plus the status page you will need the first time a customer emails to ask if you are down. Instrument with OpenTelemetry, not a vendor agent, even though it takes an extra hour.

That hour is the whole strategy.

OpenTelemetry data goes to Grafana Cloud, SigNoz, Better Stack, or Datadog with a change to the Collector config, so the first vendor you pick stops being a two-year commitment. Teams that start on dd-trace and then try to leave find out that the dashboards, monitors, and alert rules have to be rebuilt by hand, and at a 15-person company that job lands on whoever is least able to say no.

Watch the 14-day retention on Grafana's Free plan. A customer reports a broken export on the 20th, you go looking for the request from the 3rd, and the logs are gone. If that happens twice, $19 a month for 30-day logs is the cheapest fix you will buy this year.

When Datadog is still the right call

Sometimes it is. If your accelerator or lead investor gets you into Datadog's startup program and the credits cover your first year, the product is excellent and the dashboards are ready the minute the agent starts. Datadog also keeps the highest rating in this comparison (9.2) because no alternative matches its breadth, from synthetics to cloud security.

Do the year-two math before you accept. On list prices our seed team goes from $0 to about $320 a month the day the credits end, and by Series A the same workload is about $640, five times the Grafana Cloud bill. If you take the credits, instrument with OpenTelemetry anyway and send the data to Datadog through the Collector.

Where each option fits (and where it does not)

ToolFits a startup thatDoes not fit a startup that
Grafana CloudHas 1 to 3 engineers today, already knows Prometheus, and wants $0 until real traffic arrivesWants opinionated APM screens with zero dashboard work, or cannot live with 14-day retention on Free
SigNozIs OpenTelemetry-native, debugs by jumping from a slow span to its logs, or has a customer that requires data in its own cloudHas nobody to own ClickHouse (self-hosted), or scrapes high-cardinality metrics every few seconds (Cloud)
Better StackRuns a monolith or two services and mostly needs to know when the site is down and who gets woken upSpends its debugging time tracing requests across many services
DatadogHas startup credits, a platform engineer, and a plan for year twoIs paying list price at seed for features nobody on the team has opened

Most startups we would point to Grafana Cloud plus Better Stack, then add SigNoz or Grafana's tracing views when the service count passes about five. That ordering is ours, and a team already fluent in OpenTelemetry could reasonably start on SigNoz instead.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Datadog alternative for a startup in 2026?

Grafana Cloud is the best Datadog alternative for most startups in 2026, because its Free plan (10,000 metric series, 50 GB of logs, 50 GB of traces, 3 users) covers a typical pre-seed or seed product at $0, and the $19/month Pro plan keeps the same allowances when the team grows. Add Better Stack's free tier for uptime checks and a status page. Pick SigNoz instead if you are instrumenting with OpenTelemetry from day one and want traces and logs in a single screen.

How much does monitoring cost a seed-stage startup on Grafana Cloud, Better Stack, SigNoz, and Datadog?

For our modeled seed-stage team (5 hosts, 50 GB of logs, 20 GB of traces, 10,000 metric series, 4 engineers), October 2026 list prices come to about $27/month on Grafana Cloud Pro, about $64/month on SigNoz Cloud, about $16/month in telemetry on Better Stack plus $29 to $34 per on-call responder, and about $320/month on Datadog with infrastructure, APM, and indexed logs.

Can a startup run Grafana Cloud for free?

Yes, if it stays inside the Free plan: 10,000 active metric series, 50 GB of logs, 50 GB of traces, and 3 active users a month. The two limits startups hit first are the 3-user cap, which a fourth engineer breaks, and 14-day retention, which means logs from a bug reported three weeks later are already gone. Grafana Cloud Pro fixes both for $19/month plus $8 for each active user past three.

Should a startup self-host SigNoz to save money?

Usually not before Series A. The open-source edition is free, but you pay for the server and for an engineer's time keeping ClickHouse disks, upgrades, and retention healthy. SigNoz Cloud starts at $49/month and counts that $49 toward usage, which is cheaper than one afternoon of a senior engineer's time each month. Self-hosting makes sense earlier only when customer contracts require telemetry to stay in your own cloud account.

Is Better Stack enough monitoring for an early-stage startup?

For a product with one or two services, often yes. Better Stack covers uptime checks, phone and Slack alerts, on-call schedules, a public status page, and log search, and its free tier includes 10 monitors and 1 status page. It is weakest at distributed tracing, so once a slow request crosses three or four services you will want Grafana Cloud or SigNoz next to it.

Should a startup take Datadog's startup credits?

Take them if you qualify and you would pick Datadog on features anyway, but price the year after the credits before you instrument everything with Datadog agents. Our seed-stage model costs about $320/month on Datadog list prices against $27 on Grafana Cloud Pro, and moving off dd-trace later means rebuilding every dashboard and monitor. Instrumenting with OpenTelemetry keeps that exit open whichever vendor you start on.
